      BRANWEN - THE WINTER QUEEN

                I.  The Giving Away

She was not born in winter. She was born in summer, with dark hair, but great houses do not raise daughters, they raise treaties. When the King of Ireland came with ships, her brother saw an alliance. They dressed her in sky blue and gave her away on a beach with songs. She smiled, that is what your suppose to do when you are being given away.

               II.  The Collar Crown

Ireland was kind, then quiet. They were cruel in a quiet way. He never raised a hand. He had a better weapon, forgetting. He forgot she was a queen and remembered she could cook, clean, carry. He moved her bed to beside the fire pit. The court learned to laugh when she passed with flour on her hands.  Her worst violence was not a blow, it was being made to shrink, while she was still alive. She began to speak less, not because she had nothing to say, but because no one listened in her language anymore.

               III.  The Kitchen & The Child

She found kinship with the unseen, the kitchen women, the fire. They called her love. That was more true than Queen. For a brief blinding moment she was a mother, something smalland warm seen with her eyes. For seven months, winter stopped inside her. Then he was gone. We can’t say how. One morning the fire burned, but the bundle did not. Something where mothers keep their second heart cracked into two. They expected pretty wailing. She wept silent in a way that even frightened ravens.

               IV.  The Wintering & The Raven

Snow fell inside her and never stopped. She let it. People said she was gone. She wasn't. She was wintering. Winter is not death. It is preservation. The earth pulling wisdom into the root because the surface is not safe. She did not bloom. She endured. That is a holy, an ugly courage, Then the white raven came, not with answers, to be a witness. He looked at her, not past her. He brought holly that lived under ice, a moonstone, a pine needle that refused to fall. He taught her, the pine doesn't beg snow to leave, it learns to carry it. You don't have to be warm to be alive.

                  V.  The Warrior

One morning flour and frost covered, she said in her own tongue "No more". She walked through the hall where they laughed, didn't look at the king. She walked to the sea, it was frozen. She stepped on and it held, because ice is strong. She walked back across the water she was shipped across as a treaty. When she reached the other shore, hair white, raven on shoulder, voice hoarse

"I am Branwen I wintered alone so spring could return."

She did not become the summer girl again. She became a woman who could hold both mother and mourning, queen and kitchen, frost and the small lit room she kept alive for anyone else still wintering. That is how a victim becomes a warrior, not by never being wounded, but by letting the wound become a kingdom, and ruling it.

Branwen endured betrayal, exile, and unspeakable loss. The world tried to bury her in winter. She became the Winter Queen instead.
