THE SEVEN WHO BECAME ONE

We were not born sisters.

We were born seven different places. Seven different languages in our kitchens. Seven different textures of hair. Seven different ways the world tried to tell us who to be, and seven different ways it tried to break us. For a long time we carried our cracks alone. We thought the break was proof we had failed. We covered it. We hid it. We smiled over it.

Then we found each other.

Not in a perfect place. In the quiet after. In the in-between where you go when you're done pretending you're okay, and when we sat together for the first time, we didn't have to explain. She looked at my crack and recognized her own. She didn't flinch. She saw gold.

That's Kintsugi.

In Japan, when a bowl shatters, they don't throw it away. They don't hide the break. They take the broken pieces and seal them with gold. The bowl becomes more beautiful than before, because now you can see where it has been. You can see that it survived.

We did that for each other.

My gold held her together. Her gold held me. The lines you see on our faces are not scars we are ashamed of. They are the places we were glued back together by each other. Gold where we were once split. Teal where we wept and then learned that tears, held by sisters, become diamonds. One of us is blonde. One has black hair straight as a river. One has curls tight as a crown. One has brown waves. One has curls with flowers tucked in, but when you look at us now, you don't see seven separate women. You see one head. One heart. Seven faces intertwined so close you can't tell where one ends and the next begins.

Because that's what sisterhood is.

We were not twins at birth. We became twins in the healing.  Intertwined by the thread of gold that runs from my cheek to hers. Seven different stories braided into one. We are not seven victims who happen to stand together. We are one sisterhood that decided we would no longer be victims at all.

We are Victims 2 Warriors.

When you wear us on your back, you are not wearing seven strangers. You are wearing proof that broken women who find each other don't stay broken.

One feather alone falls. Seven feathers together become wings.

Warning: once you throw this soft-to-the-touch cotton blend hoodie on, you may not want to take it off.
