Chapter 1: THE ASHEN QUEEN
— In the ashes —
She is on her knees, not because she is praying, because she doesn't have the strength to stand anymore. Her dress, if you can still call it that is torn, dirty grey, hanging off her shoulders. It was once beautiful. So was she. The world took its time taking that from her. Not all at once. Piece by piece. Her hair is wet, heavy, stuck to her face. Her eyes are closed. Not in peace. In exhaustion. The kind of exhaustion that comes from holding yourself together for way too long. Look at her arms. Her skin. Her chest.
Cracks
Golden cracks, running like rivers of light through her body. Kintsugi. The Japanese art of mending what was broken with gold. She is breaking, yes, but the light is getting in through the breaks. She doesn't see it yet. But it's there, and in the center of her chest where her heart should be hollow, there is a glow. A small, defiant, teal heart of light, pulsing. Sparking. Still alive. After everything that tried to kill it, it's still glowing. Teal feathers fall around her. Not from wings she has. From wings she will have.
She doesn't know she's a queen.
Queens don't always know at first. Right now she is just a girl in the ashes, head bowed, hands on her knees, wondering if this is the end. She thinks the ash is her grave. She doesn't know it's actually her throne being built.
This is Chapter 1 for a reason.
Every Phoenix story has to start here. Before the fire. Before the flight. Before the roar. It starts in the quiet. In the ash. In the moment you are at your lowest, but your heart still has one light left in it.
She is still in the ashes, but the ashes are not the end of her. The ashes are where queens are made.
