The Dreamer
He didn't always draw.
For a long time, he kept his head down. When you go through hard things early, you learn to make yourself small. You learn to sit on the curb and not take up too much space. You learn to be quiet. That's where we found him. On the curb. Hoodie up. Looking at the ground because the ground felt safer than looking up. They would have called him a victim. And maybe, for a little while, he was.
But trauma didn't get the last word.
That morning, someone left a piece of gold chalk next to his foot. He didn't know who. He picked it up, and for the first time in a long time, he didn't draw what hurt him. He drew what could heal him. A swirl., a galaxy, a whole world that didn't have sirens or slammed doors or nights where he had to be the grown up. He was drawing a place where he was safe.
Where he was soft.
Where he was golden.
Where he wasn't what happened to him.
His hand was shaking at first. Trauma does that. It makes your hands shake when you try to make something beautiful after only seeing broken things, but he kept going, and the more he drew, the more the gold stopped being chalk and started being him, because here's what nobody tells youth dealing with trauma...
You are not what hurt you.
You are what you dream after.
That galaxy on the concrete? That's not pretend. That's his nervous system learning that it can still imagine. That's his heart learning it can still glow after being hurt.
He's not escaping reality.
He's building a new one.
One gold swirl at a time.
